10 Best Hard Rock Albums Of The 1970s

3. Raw Power - The Stooges

When it came to the music scene in America, many of the great bands of the era were either coming from the Northeast of New York or out West in California. That is, until these four maniacal kids from Detroit burst onto the scene.

The Stooges music throughout their career was a beautiful mess, with endlessly buzzing guitars and wildman Iggy Pop creating a hard rock congregation with each live show. After two albums though, the band was falling apart and Pop was strung out on heroin. As they created their third release, Raw Power became the call to arms for all hard rock maniacs.

With fantastic thrashers like "Shake Appeal" and the single "Search and Destroy," The Stooges reached into the depths of their souls to deliver stirring primal rock. Even the slower cuts like "Gimme Danger" have an uneasy menacing bent that comes from Pop's feral delivery.

This album certainly lives up to its title by exposing listeners to some of the rawest sounds of rock that had ever been made. Lying just underneath the surface, Raw Power stands up as the initial birthing pains of what would later become punk rock.
