10 Best Hard Rock Bands Of The 1970's

5. Rolling Stones

In the 60's, the Rolling Stones were known as the most dangerous band in England, with a heavier sound that was a perfect antithesis to the Beatles's cleaner approach. Once the glow of the previous decade faded, The Stones went into the 70's getting even more dangerous after growing up in the rock world.

Though there had been some ominous tracks in the band's back catalog with "Paint It Black," albums like Sticky Fingers and Let it Bleed were where the band went from a bit of mischief to full-blown menace. The riffs on songs like "Gimme Shelter" and "Can't You Hear Me Knockin" were the next logical step that the band had to take in order to keep themselves one notch above the younger bands coming out of the woodwork. This is also around the time that guitarist Keith Richards discovered the legendary open-G tuning, whose sound would become synonymous with the Rolling Stones further down the road.

After the initial success of their 60's output, the Stones grew into something far greater than their bluesy pop roots. With all of the competition breathing down their necks, The Stones showed the rock world why they were still the most dangerous act in the rock community.
