10 Best Hard Rock Bands Of The 90s

4. Soundgarden

After the band imploded in the late 70's, the hard rock community was devastated with the loss of the mighty Led Zeppelin. It wasn't until the early 90's that the fans of Zeppelin's thunder finally had their prayers answered with the arrival of Soundgarden.

That's not to say that Soundgarden is a carbon copy of Zeppelin, however. Their unique brand of hard rock was something unprecedented in the Seattle scene, with songs that combined everything from infectious grooves to prog-style time signature changes. If some bands joined the alternative scene just to play, Soundgarden's approach was always to experiment with the confines of hard rock music as a whole.

The early music of the band's career can get downright metal in places on albums like Badmotorfinger, but the sound of the band cannot be put into one category. In fact, the only consistent element of Soundgarden's music is the searing voice of Chris Cornell, whose stratospheric screams still resonate with rock fans to this day. From their early days of mixing metal and punk to their late period masterpieces of psychedelic and classic rock styles, there was no debating that Soundgarden was one of the heaviest acts to come from the alt-rock boom.
