10 Best Hard Rock Documentaries You've Never Seen
1. Anvil! The Story Of Anvil
In 1984, heavy metal band Anvil were set to make it big, joining the likes of Bon Jovi and Whitesnake on a sold out arena tour of Japan. But, poor management and a string of bad luck saw the band fade into obscurity.
This heart-warming rockumentary picks up some 20 years later. The now aged Canadian rockers, Steve 'Lips' Kudlow, and Robb Reiner are working unglamorous day jobs, but on the weekends they still rock out in local bars to a handful of hardcore fans.
With an inspirational display of dedication, the band decide to take on one last European tour in the hopes of catching the eye of a major label and signing a record deal. The tour is set with trials and tribulations, however, with the band missing trains, getting into altercations with venue promoters and almost breaking up.
It's a film that's full of laughs. With several scenes reminiscent of Spinal Tap, the filmmakers certainly made deliberate choices to pay tribute to that 1984 rock-comedy classic. Nevertheless, they handle the story of Anvil with respect, leaning into the laughs when appropriate and capturing moments that are full of real world emotion at others.
Anvil! The Story of Anvil is simply one of the best rock documentaries of all time.
