10 Best Hard Rock Music Videos Of The 90s
8. Killing In The Name - Rage Against The Machine (1992)
There's only one way to capture the energy of Rage Against The Machine. No other form of music video will do justice to the aggressive impact of this politically charged brand of music. All you can do is film a few gigs, mash the footage together and hope you've done enough to give the people an idea of what these guys are about.
The video for Killing In The Name was cobbled together using the footage of two separate gigs at prominent music venues from the LA music scene, The Whiskey A Go Go and the Club With No Name.
The video captured the raw frenzy of Rage's live presence, displaying the impact their music had on fans. Much of the footage is up close, out of focus, and pays no heed to any typical framing conventions, but it severed as the perfect metaphor for the bands impassioned music.
It shows sweaty crowds bouncing up and down as Zack de la Rocha conducts the mayhem from stage. There's crowd surfing, mosh pits and even a brawl with a bouncer as the audience gets a little too rowdy - clearly the fans felt the message of da la Rocha's lyrics.
The song was a musical middle finger to the establishment and the video was equally as defiant.
