10 Best Hip-Hop Albums Of 2016 (So Far)

7. Flatbush Zombies - "3001: A Laced Odyssey"

Their first full-length project since 2013’s stellar “Better Off Dead” mixtape (and their first studio album outright), Flatbush Zombies have traded much of their trademark hyped-up aggression for a trippier, more atmospheric vibe on “3001: A Laced Odyssey”.

This is a dark, paranoid journey filled with good old-fashioned lyrical gymnastics and top tier production, and there’s an almost dream-like quality to tracks like “The Odyssey” and “Fly Away.” This artistic growth is what makes “3001” such a triumph, and what will maintain the Zombies’ long-term relevance.

There’s no obvious lead single among these tracks, but that’s fine. This release is all about the full-album experience, and the Brooklyn-based trio have succeeded in curbing their harsh, juvenile edge without sacrificing their fire and spirit.
