10 Best Instrumental Rock Albums Since 2000

7. 65DaysOfStatic - The Fall Of Math

Godspeed You Black Emperor, Lift Your Skinny Fists
Monotreme Records

This soaring 2004 debut album marked 65DaysOfStatic’s emergence onto the instrumental rock scene. Always a band willing to experiment for the main goal of creating something interesting and different, their first record sees the group reach staggering heights so early on in their musical careers.

Their sound palette is diverse, helping to give songs like the shoegaze comet ‘Retreat! Retreat!’ or the progressive sound mechanism ‘I Swallowed Hard, Like I Understood’ some genuine vibrancy and urgency. Their love of guitar orientated music is only matched by their love of electronic mind trickery, creating an almost dangerous arrangement of differing musical traits that add to the album’s odd but infectious charm.

The band’s technical prowess is always evident, whether it be in their ability to interweave musical passages that ascend and descend at alarming yet impressive rates or the heightened pop sensibilities that linger amidst their frenetic sound. Highlights include the scattered, auditory assaulting title track, the super tight, rhythm interlocker ‘This Cat Is A Landmine’ or the obtuse virtuoso piece ‘Hole’, capping off what is a fantastic LP.

It may be tough to get your head around at first but once all of its musical nodes fall into place, The Fall Of Math will expand your mind in ways you never thought music could.
