10 Best Japanese Rock & Metal Bands You Need To Listen To

2. B'z

The most successful rock musical act in Japanese history, as well as one of the most successful in the entire world, B’z are true rock icons who, if you haven’t already, absolutely need to include in your music collections and playlists.

The formation of the legendary rock duo dates back to the late 80s. Guitarist and composer Tak Matsumoto, having released a solo album, wanted to start a band. His search led him to singer Koshi Inaba, and before long B’z was formed.

Initially their sound had a strong electronic feel to it, complementing Matsumoto’s guitar play. Their debut album, B’z, reflected that. However, as time passed, and they perfected their musical style, B’z transitioned into a more traditional hard rock sound.

The single, Taiyo No Komochi Angel, from the third album was their first to hit number 1 on the Oricon charts. Their move to traditional rock was sealed by their fifth album In The Life. Subsequent albums saw them incorporate blues and pop into their music.

The early 2000s saw them perform alongside Aerosmith for the Fifa World Cup 2002 concert, as well as touring all over the world. In 2007, decades of incredible work was rewarded with their induction in Hollywood’s RockWalk, the first time an Asian artist received the honor.

Songs to get you started include Zero, Friction, Super Love, Don’t Wanna Lie, among so many others.
