4. Caravan - Van Morrison & The Band (1978)
The Last Waltz was Martin Scorsese's first venture into concert filming. And by all accounts, it was one hell of an undertaking. This was a period when Scorsese was heavily indulging in cocaine, using it to help facilitate the daunting task of capturing such a large show.
Filmed across several nights, the concert was a farewell to fans, after The Band chose to disband for a several years. The concert included guest appearances from a plethora of well known acts. Everyone from Joni Mitchel and Bob Dylan to Eric Clapton and Neil Young took to the stage as part of the celebration of The Bands legacy.
Each and every one of the performances was memorable. But one of the more powerful moments was when 'Van the Man' led a rousing rendition of his hit Caravan. Forget all the controversial and bumbling statements he made during the Coronavirus pandemic, this man can perform like no other.
Kicking his tiny legs up and down the stage, Morrison commanded the room with his growling Irish vocals, and even busted into some impromptu scat singing. This song has never sounded as good as when Morrison was backed up the musical stylings of The Band, and with Scorsese behind the camera you don't miss a second of the action.
