Yip/Jump Music may be the most accessible of Daniel Johnston's 1980s output. It is also the first release in which he used his trademark chord organ.

Songs such as "Speeding Motorcycle" and "Worried Shoes" stand out as some of the greatest songs in Johnston's catalogue. It is an earnest, complex album that rewards as a perfect starting point for his difficult-to-approach discography.

The lo-fi quality of his releases in the 1980s are not necessarily lo-fi as an aesthetic, though. They found their recognition after being passed around as they existed. The simplicity that would become something to be sought after all throughout the 90s is something that Johnston had to work around or work with, and with it he produced a long line of challenging, phenomenal work that became a marker for many of the other albums on the list.
