10 Best Metallica Songs

3. Nothing Else Matters - The Black Album (1991)

‘Nothing Else Matters’ is one of Metallica’s lightest tracks. With its slow tempo and predominately clean guitar tone, the song is a standout composition within the band’s discography.

There is no denying that it is one of the most beautiful pieces Metallica has ever written, and much of this is down to Hetfield’s vocals. Though previous albums had their softer moments when it came to the vocal delivery, ‘Nothing Else Matters’ really demonstrates the gentler, more melodic side of Hetfield’s ability as a vocalist.

The solo is also unique in that it was performed by Hetfield rather than Hammett, and whilst it’s a lot more simplistic that some of the band’s other solos, it fits the atmosphere of the track perfectly.

To those who think metal is nothing more than a wall of noise and aggression, ‘Nothing Else Matters’ is the ultimate way to prove them wrong.
