10 Best Number One Rock Albums Of The 1980s

7. Brothers In Arms - Dire Straits

Springsteen's Born in the U.S.A may have sold the most copies in 1985, but for the album that topped the charts the longest, you needed to head overseas.

British group Dire Straits, lead by guitar maestro Mark Knopfler, had never had a US number one before, coming closest with their second-placing debut back in 1978. That all changed when they put out one of the best-selling records of all time, the phenomenal Brothers in Arms.

A mixture of cool-as-ice rockers (Money For Nothing), dancey pop tunes (Walk of Life), and sombre ballads (the title track), Brothers in Arms had something for everyone, and people on both sides of the pond headed out en masse to buy it.

In the present day, the album has shifted a whopping 30 million units worldwide, with nine million of those coming from the United States alone. It remains the definitive Dire Straits album to many and helped the band secure their legacy.

Sadly, they would only put out one more studio album after this, and that wouldn't be until 1991. Still, it's not like they needed the cash.
