10 Best Posthumous Rock Music Releases

1. MTV Unplugged In New York - Nirvana

In 1994, when his band Nirvana were on top of the world, Kurt Cobain took his own life.

The troubled singer shot himself with a shotgun and left a suicide note quoting a Neil Young song. His death sparked massive outpourings of grief around the world, as music struggled to cope with the loss of one of its biggest stars.

Seven months before these awful events transpired, Nirvana released their third album In Utero. Whilst this would turn out to be Cobain's final piece of studio work, he had one last parting gift up his sleeve.

Although it was recorded in November 1993, the recordings of Nirvana's appearance on MTV Unplugged didn't come out until a year later.

Fans could remind themselves of this excellent performance, in which the band played stripped back versions of their famous songs and offered up their takes on other people's work.

Though Cobain had been dead for over half a year, his spirit lived on through one of the most famous live albums ever made. Whilst it was unknown at the time, Unplugged would serve as a glorious epilogue to a story that ended far too soon.
