10 Best Red Hot Chili Peppers Albums

1. Blood Sugar Sex Magik

It may come as no surprise to many of you that Blood Sugar Sex Magik takes the number one spot on this list. While Keidis arguably is at his strongest on the aforementioned Californication, the band seemed to truly reach the absolute synthesis of what they had been and what they were to become on this record. The hypersexualised machismo of their '80s discography is still alive and well throughout Suck My Kiss, Give It Away and lesser-known album tracks like If You Have to Ask and Sir Psycho Sexy.

However, it was the melodic side of the band that was truly born here, with Keidis delivering arguably his greatest melody on Under The Bridge, and serving up memorable choruses on I Could Have Lied and Breaking The Girl. Frusciante and Flea complement one another perfectly, with the bassist taking a more subdued role here in contrast to the hyperactive slap basslines of The Uplift Mofo Party Plan and Mother's Milk.

Notably, this is RHCP’s first album with Rick Rubin, who would go on to produce all but one of the band's albums after this. Lastly, the magic of the recording process of Blood Sugar Sex Magik in a supposedly haunted LA mansion was captured by the fantastic black-and-white documentary Funky Monks - which is well worth a watch for any Chili Peppers fan.
