10 Best Red Hot Chili Peppers Albums
5. I'm With You
A controversial one here perhaps? I’m with You, the first of the two-album Klinghoffer era, is shorter, and much more restrained than its predecessor, the gargantuan double-album Stadium Arcadium. Klinghoffer seems to be only testing the water in this album, his contributions subtle, but allowing the band's vaunted rhythm section to shine by never taking up too much space.
Standout tracks include fan-favourite The Adventures of Raindance Maggie (which spawned the unfortunate cowbell memery), the beautiful Brendan's Death Song, and the brilliant gem Meet Me At The Corner, with its melodic bassline, catchy melancholic chorus and stunning refrain, Klinghoffer's vocals bursting through for the first time on the album. Flea stamps his authority on the record, as with One Hot Minute, in Frusciante’s absence, churning out one killer bassline after another, with Factory of Faith, Look Around, Ethiopia, Raindance Maggie and Meet Me At The Corner in particular all belonging in any bassist's repertoire.
However, there are some duds on the album - such as Dance, Dance, Dance - and the departure from Frusciante to Klinghoffer is stark, with the album being noticeably bereft of any of the accustomed iconic riffery. Still, as times passes, I’m with You’s legacy continues to grow, and it deserves it.
