9. Hallowed Be Thy Name - The Number Of The Beast

Iron Maiden's first effort with vocalist Bruce Dickinson ends on the spectacular high note that is "Hallowed Be Thy Name". Told from the perspective of a man that has been condemned to death, the song explores how this character isn't afraid of death, and how he refuses to apologise for the crimes that he has committed whilst being led to his imminent death. Although the subject matter is quite grim, the band is still able to turn it into a beloved classic, something that they have excelled at over their forty year career.

First time listeners will quickly understand why Dickinson's nickname is the "Air Raid Siren". His high-pitched vocals accurately convey the agony and the tragedy of the song's main character to an impressive degree. Maiden's rhythm section, bassist Steve Harris and drummer Clive Burr, are on top form here, whilst Dave Murray's and Adrian Smith's twin solos perfectly display how talented they are as guitarists. "Hallowed Be Thy Name", along with The Number Of The Beast, is a brilliant introduction to the band, as they perfectly encapsulate the sound and lyrical themes of Iron Maiden.
