10 Best Rock Albums Of 2021

5. Cavalcade – Black Midi

Math rock combined with acid jazz, post punk and spoken word poetry - Black Midi's second album, Cavalcade, certainly isn't for everybody. There isn't anything conventional about the sounds coming from this album but it demands your attention whether you want to give it or not.

There's a distinct like of cohesion to this record and that's not surprising considering the insane time changes the musicians are playing with. Opening up with the acid jazz nightmare, John L, will either encourage people to turn this record off immediately, or stick around out of shocked intrigue.

After the initial cacophony of madness, we're treated to a mellow piece of lounge music, that throughout its run time, lures you into a false sense of calm. Before long, however, it's right back into the charnel house of music. This is an album that will test your patience and open your eyes to the sheer scope that music can encompasses.

When you think you've become accustomed to the rhythms and melodies, something else mad happens, whether it be thrashing guitar, screeching horns or wild vocals.

It's not going to be an album to kick back to on a Sunday afternoon, but it's certainly worth your time, if only to say you've experienced it.
