10 Best Rock Albums Of The 1970s
4. Ziggy Stardust - David Bowie
At the start of the 70's, the glam rock movement was first starting to come into fruition on the British rock scene. Bands like Sweet, T. Rex, and Mott the Hoople would soon come out of the woodwork to create some of the most glittery rock and roll of the era. Then again, David Bowie had always been ahead of his contemporaries.
After flirtations with more eclectic songwriting styles on his previous effort Hunky Dory, Bowie hit upon the idea of a character that would be the perfect example of a rock star. Around that concept, Ziggy Stardust was born, with some of the most tuneful songs Bowie had created to date. This album has some of the most off-the-wall moments of Bowie's career while also having his most potent vocal hooks. Take the song "Starman," for example. The tune itself has one of the most unusual chord sequences in the entire rock canon, but the melody of the track is absolutely irresistible as Ziggy himself pulls you in with his space-age croon.
The album is one of rock's greatest conceptual pieces, as it takes everything that was considered strange and turns it into something beautiful. Knowing Bowie, he wouldn't want it any other way.
