10 Best Rock Albums That Everyone Forgets About
7. Aladdin Sane - David Bowie
In rock and roll, success is never really considered to be a bad thing. After all, what drawbacks can come with having one of your biggest albums on the top of the charts? Well, sometimes with the best intentions, even something gigantic can end up going south really quick.
As David Bowie entered his glam rock period with the arrival of Ziggy Stardust, his rapid followup with Aladdin Sane gave him even more notoriety. However, people tend to not really bring up anything from this album outside of the main single The Jean Genie. Yeah, other than the absolutely flawless cover art, this one tends to get heralded as Ziggy Pt. 2 even by Bowie himself, which is doing the entire rest of the album a disservice in the process. Crafted as Ziggy going to America, these songs are a lot punchier than Ziggy's proper album, with songs like Watch That Man earning a spot among the greatest Bowie songs ever.
Even the more goofy stuff like Bowie's version of the Rolling Stones' Let's Spend the Night Together is great, as he leans into his character persona even more. This record also has one of the greatest album closers of all time, with Lady Grinning Soul having all of the dramatics and passion of a late James Bond theme. So next time you get a look at this amazing artwork, try to give a listen to the deep cuts to see Bowie's real muse.
