10 Best Rock Ballads Of The 90's

8. How's It Going To Be - Third Eye Blind

In the barrage of alt rock bands to come out in the post-Nirvana world, Third Eye Blind was one band that could have been easily ignored. From the band's sunshine-y melodies to their one-hit wonder potential with "Semi-Charmed Life," the band were poised to be a flash in the pan on first glance.

Between all the bright angsty pop tunes, these rockers from San Francisco somehow turned in one of the most underrated ballads that the decade has ever known. The protagonist in this song is clearly not in a good spot in his relationship, with each exchange almost erupting into violence. However, the choruses let the idea sink in: what will life be like after losing one of the most important people in your life? You may think you've made the best decision of your life, yet it's hard to go back to being alone.

Stephen Jenkins's vocal performance is really level-headed while also being incredibly emotional, almost like he doesn't want to live in a world without his love, but feels he needs to know to hold onto his sanity. Third Eye Blind may not have been the most prolific band to emerge from the 90's rock scene, but this song is the sound of being at the end of your rope: gutted in the present and terrified of your future.
