10 Best Rock Bands From Ireland

6. Girl Band

One of the most exciting acts coming out of Ireland today is Dublin four piece Girl Band. A confrontational and often challenging band, they’re noise makers of the highest order, stripping down a post-punk sound to something rhythmic and often primal, all delivered with chest beating charisma laced with fragility.

Their debut album Holding Hands With Jamie dropped in 2015 after the terrific France 98 EP, and struck a nerve with fans of raw noise rock. It’s music meant to be played loud, grinding stuff but highly detailed and in the single “Paul” downright catchy in parts.

Their 2019 follow up was an even more well realised sound, an album with a real throughline, indulging in industrial sounds and outright horror. Opener “Prolix” includes the sound of the frontman mid-panic attack. “Salmon Of Knowledge” is the highlight, an epic built around a lengthy chant and sawing guitars.

The album sold well for a niche interest, and in following it up, Girl Band cemented their status as a particularly exciting live act. If you like your music gritty and tough, these are your guys.
