10 Best Rock Drummers Of All Time
6. Danny Carey
As the grunge movement was dying out and nu metal began rearing its head, a small prog metal band came out of the woodwork to become one of the greatest metal bands of all time. With each passing record, Tool was a band that took their sound to places the rock genre had never been and created some of the most enduring music of the late 90's and early 2000's.
One big aspect of Tool's excellence is Danny Carey, who often utilized polyrhythms and complex arrangements into Tool tracks that are unlike anything any drummer had done before. His unique approach to timing brought the more mathmatical side of music into view, such as the Fibonacci sequencing on the band's track "Lateralus." On the other end of the spectrum, Carey also knew how to lay down slamming grooves that made you headbang like "Stinkfist" and late-era masterstroke "Vicarious." The band's song "Schism" is an art of genius with the way Carey switches meter constantly while weaving together an incredibly coherent metal rager.
Modern prog drummers pride themselves on their perception of hard rhythms and shifts in time signatures, but only the brave ever dare to take on Danny Carey's drum parts.
