10 Best Rock Music Videos Of The 1980s
7. Cult Of Personality - Living Colour
In 1988, Living Colour released their debut album Vivid and knocked it out of the park with the very first song.
Cult of Personality not only has an infectious groove to it and some amazing guitar playing from Vernon Reid, but it also uses various political figures from across history to warn of the dangers of a charismatic leader.
The song features actual clips of JFK, FDR, and Malcolm X, and drops names like Mussolini, Stalin, and Gandhi into the mix. All of this is fertile ground when it comes to making a music video and Living Colour farmed that ground good and proper.
Alongside footage of the band playing the song, the video for Cult of Personality features images of various leaders speaking, as well as moments of civil unrest as a small child watches on through a TV screen.
Living Colour definitely made the most out of this rich subject matter, creating a video that is just as iconic as the song itself. Also, singer Corey Glover seems to be wearing a bright yellow one-piece in the video, which also earns it points.
