10 Best Rock Power Trios
5. The Police
In retrospect, the Police were a true oddity in the new wave scene of the late 1970's. While their songs did have the nervy energy of their new wave brethren, the tinges of jazz and reggae were certainly strange at the time. One thing that always remained consistent though was the catchiness of every single track they put out.
From the punk energy of their earlier work to their more experimental later years, the Police were pivotal in the defining sounds that shaped the 80's. Much of the praise is put on Sting's incredible melody writing, but Stewart Copeland's drum parts cannot be overlooked. The way Copeland hammered out each track and innovated the drum kit made him a true virtuoso with two sticks. With Andy Summer's sonic guitar landscapes, the band was a true pop juggernaut.
The songs from this band were always irresisitble while staying musically adventurous from the echo on "Walking on the Moon" to the calypso flair of "Every Little Thing She Does is Magic" to the dark moodiness of "Every Breath You Take." By the time the band had called it quits in the mid 80's, they were one of the most successful trios in the world.
