10 Best Rock Samples In Hip Hop

1. Space Oddity - Rap Snitches Knishes (MF DOOM)

Daniel Dumile (MF DOOM) was the undisputed king of sampling. One of the most enigmatic and captivating figures in hip-hop, the mystery surrounding him was manifested by his many aliases, and his adoption of a metal face mask (modelled on the helmet from the movie Gladiator) when appearing in public. Adding to the mystique, Dumile would send members of his entourage on stage in the face mask to pose as his character MF DOOM.

He was credited with having the ability to sample the most obscure references from pop culture, using sound bites from old tv shows, children's cartoons and superhero movies.

For his 2004 track Rap Snitches, he sampled a few seconds of guitar from Space Oddity. But don't be mistaken, it wasn't the David Bowie version he sampled, that would be far too obvious for DOOM. The guitar hook was taken from the Dave Matthews's 1977 cover of the Bowie classic.

The Mathews version was fairly uninspiring but contained a guitar part that was irresistible for an artist like MF DOOM.

To make things more convoluted the sample DOOM used was pulled from an earlier track Coffin Nails, which also used the guitar hook, but was released under his alias Metal Fingers.
