10 Best Self-Titled Music Albums In Metal History

Speaking of revolutionary nu-metal albums from the 1990s…

Contrary to popular belief, ‘Slipknot’ is not the first release from the unparalleled modern metal goliaths, but it is generally considered to be their debut album. 1996’s ‘Mate. Feed. Kill. Repeat.’ earns the title of being Slipknot’s first full-length release, although the band have since demoted it to a demo album despite it being considered a full studio record upon its release. Most tracks from this ‘demo’ album have been re-recorded and featured on later records, including their self-titled ‘debut’ in 1999.

As the first Slipknot album to feature Corey Taylor on vocals instead of Anders Colsefni, ‘Slipknot’ was a sensation in both metal and mainstream pop culture. The band brought hyperactive levels of chaos that the world had never seen before, which was only fuelled by their eccentric stage presence and insane presentation.

Where other albums on this list had to wait several years before they were given their flowers, ‘Slipknot’ was an instant sensation. Now-iconic Slipknot tracks such as ‘Wait and Bleed’, ‘(sic)’, ‘Surfacing’, and the dangerously underrated ‘No Life’ boldened the sudden mania surrounding the band, allowing them to build a metal legacy that rivals some of the greatest acts ever produced by the genre. Although it was outperformed by its successor, ‘Iowa’, the self-titled record has sold over three million physical copies worldwide and is platinum certified in four countries.
