10 Best Self-Titled Rock Albums Of All Time
1. The Beatles (1968)
Without meaning to sound overly dramatic - this might be one of the most important albums to ever have been written. With 30 tracks amounting to over 90 minutes of perfection, The Beatles covered everything from folk, psychedelia, pop, rock and even metal. That's right, metal, go listen to Helter Sketler and say it isn't...
Despite the albums brilliance, the recording process was marked by infighting. McCartney was taking on the role of band leader; Harrison was fed up with having his songs bumped; and Lennon had Yoko constantly at his side. Tracks were recorded and rerecorded dozens of times - the final take of Helter Skelter featured a frustrated Ringo exclaiming "I've got blisters on my fingers!". And, George Harrison was so dissatisfied with the band's version of, While My Guitar Gently Weeps, that he recruited Eric Clapton to over dub the guitar solo.
McCartney recorded Why Don't We Do It in the Road? on his own, apparently in retaliation for not being asked by Lennon to contribute to Revolution 9. Lennon, also worked closely with Yoko Ono during the mixing process, which only led to further animosity.
But for all the squabbling and dysfunction, the Fab Four, managed to top Rubber Soul, Revolver and Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. This album is significant not just because of its cultural impact but because it marked the start of the end of The Beatles.
