10 Best-Selling Rock Singles Of All Time
6. George Harrison, 'My Sweet Lord' (1970)
Total weeks on the UK Singles Chart: 31
YouTube views to date: 26 million
Following the disbanding of The Beatles – accept no substitutes – all four members hit the ground running, with their own musical projects and outputs. John Lennon had a caterwauling Yoko Ono, Paul McCartney had Wings and George Harrison had his triple album All Things Must Pass, featuring Eric Clapton, Peter Frampton and even Ringo Starr.
Though the record in its entirety is widely considered musical gold, it is its foremost single that became the defining sound for this period of Harrison's career: 'My Sweet Lord'.
Though the All Things Must Pass recording process was a big 'ol house party of the biggest names in rock, and who played what on which track has been somewhat muddled in the process, popular lore has it that 'My Sweet Lord' features all of Clapton, Frampton and Starr, along with the entire line-up of Badfinger.
The song had sold over five million copies by the late-'70s, and has total estimated sales of well over 10 million units to date, out-selling all other of Harrison's original bandmates' solo singles. It was also the very first single by an ex-Beatle to make number one in both America and the UK.
Hallelujah!
