10 Best Sequel Songs In Rock
2. Ashes to Ashes - David Bowie
David Bowie always tended to have a certain awareness laced throughout his songs. Even on his conceptual pieces like Ziggy Stardust, Bowie always had one foot in reality when showcasing his extravagant tales of what it's like to be a rock and roll star. Though Bowie has practically made an entire casts' worth of characters like Aladdin Sane and the Thin White Duke, no one expected to hear from the astronaut who started it all.
By the time Bowie got around to making Scary Monsters (and Super Creeps), he had already made enough classic albums for any other musicians' lifetime. While Ashes to Ashes was another switchup into the dance world, there's something curious going on once you get to the chorus. As Bowie soars into his falsetto, we see him brought down to Earth and bring back Major Tom from Space Oddity.
Whereas the original trip to the stars left Tom's fate ambiguous, this track checks in with our favorite hero turning himself into a junkie, which may or may not have been Bowie's sad reflection of himself from a couple albums before. This would also come back to haunt Bowie in the video for Blackstar decades later, where we see our astronaut meeting his end stranded on an uninhabited planet. Though Bowie has exposed many a listener to the possibilities of rock and roll, this kind of track shows that not all stories have happy endings.
