10 Best Sequel Songs In Rock

1. Footsteps - Pearl Jam

The entire grunge community was dealt a heavy blow when Mother Love Bone frontman Andy Wood passed away of a drug overdose. Given his reputation as one of the greatest frontmen in the scene, the rest of the band had no real choice but to call it a day right then and there. Even though you only really get that kind of magic once, they found their new calling with a mini rock opera.

Forming the foundation of what would become Pearl Jam, a tape of Stone Gossard's demos landed in Eddie Vedder's hands, who proceeded to write an opera inspired by his troubled family relationship. Titled MamaSon, the tracks that flowed followed the story of a man who finds out his dad is not really his parental figure, gets sexual advances from his mom, and ends up going on a killing spree and executed for his crime.

It's a lot of grim stuff, but the start of that medley turned out to be the makings of the song Alive, which would take these Seattle transplants to superstardom. Though the killing spree in Once kicks off the record Ten, Footsteps is the sad final thoughts of our protagonist right before execution. From the way that Eddie sings to the spare guitar lick tying everything together, you can tell that this is a man finally reaching the end of his sanity. Though this is one of the first tracks that started Pearl Jam, it's not necessarily the most optimistic of stories.
