10 Best Songs Where Hard Rock Bands Went Acoustic
7. Circle - Slipknot
There's a good chance that none of the Maggots that were on the Slipknot hype train were really prepared for Vol. III. Since this was coming off the peak of heaviness on Iowa, hearing the band blend different genres and actually getting some hits out of the deal felt strange, especially when they took the Grammy for the song Before I Forget. The freaks in the hellish masks were actually starting to hit the big time, but not without having some unplugged action in there as well.
As much as Slipknot doing ballads feels like toothpaste and orange juice for most metalheads, Circle is a much better case than any of their other ballads. While later work like Snuff get a lot of love from the metal community, there's a certain pain in this song that still reads more like Slipknot, with the ambience in the background adding to the demented nature of the entire track.
Written partly about Corey Taylor's relationship with his father, the different mindset is a much more twisted thing to take on than just a breakup song. When you hear Corey sing the words 'follow me,' it's almost like you're being offered to go through the twisted layers of his mind. The screaming is kept to a minimum on a song like this, but you don't need that kind of intensity when you're dealing with lyrics like this. If anything, playing this completely straight actually makes you feel more on edge half the time.
