6. Change Of Heart
Perhaps the band's most genuinely funny track, Change of Heart is a catchy, memorable and dry look at the breakup of a relationship between two shallow, idealistic young adults.
One of the earliest of their songs to take an extended look at online relationships (a theme they’d later revisit over the course of a full album), or in this instance, more specifically, how our real lives differ from our online personas and depictions of our lives, with the classic line, "You said I’m full of diseases/ You’re eyes were full of regret/ Then you took a picture of your salad/ And put it on the internet."
Musically, the song is a mid-tempo '80s-inspired affair with what sounds like a Theremin line during the refrain. Change of Heart is a clear example of the bands evolution from a more traditional pop-rock outfit to a more eclectic sound, taking inspiration from - and in fact going on the directly reference (in interviews and in song form) - influences such as Scottish band The Blue Nile, in particular their seminal album Hats, which is worth a listen for anyone not yet aware of them.
Standout lyric:
You smashed a glass into pieces/That's around the time I left/And you were coming across as clever/ Then you lit the wrong end of your cigarette
