10 Best Third Albums In Rock And Metal History

9. Electric Ladyland - The Jimi Hendrix Experience

For his last album as part of The Experience, Jimi Hendrix once again teamed up with Noel Redding and Mitch Mitchell to put out the staggeringly good Electric Ladyland in 1968.

The album was split over four sides on two vinyl discs and was produced by Hendrix himself. It contains some of the group's best-known songs, including the likes of "Crosstown Traffic", "Gypsy Eyes", "Voodoo Chile (Slight Return)" and the song that some forget is a cover, the band's version of Bob Dylan's "All Along the Watchtower".

A cacophony of psychedelic imagery and ear-bursting guitars, Electric Ladyland is the apex of The Jimi Hendrix Experience's total and utter disregard for the existing rules of rock 'n' roll. It takes every convention and flips it on its head, paving the way for other sub-genres to emerge in the years following.

Sadly, Jimi wouldn't live to see the full legacy of his work. He passed away less than two years later, having split The Experience up to go solo.

Jimi may have only existed on this Earth for 27 short years, but his impact will last forever.

To paraphrase the man himself, "I'll meet you in the next world. Don't be late."
