10 Best Third Albums In Rock And Metal History
6. Dookie - Green Day
The album that launched Billie-Joe & Co. into the stratosphere, Green Day dropped a huge Dookie in 1994.
Their first major label release and third overall, Dookie brought Green Day's music to a wider audience thanks in no small part to a little song called "Basket Case".
The track and its music video were inescapable in the mid-90s. It was nominated nine times at the MTV Music Video Awards and helped the band win Best Alternative Music Performance at the 1995 Grammys.
But there's so much more to this album than just its most famous song.
"When I Come Around" is on here, as is "Longview", "She", and revised version of "Welcome to Paradise". The entire album is a tight 40 minutes of explosive punk, infused with the rhythmic qualities of the burgeoning pop-punk genre.
From top to bottom, Dookie is a delight to listen to and perfectly captures the anxiety and anger felt by young Americans at the time. In many ways, it is a precursor to the themes and ideas of Green Day's next big hit, American Idiot.
Can't say much more than that, can you.
