10 Best UK Albums Of 2019

9. FKA Twigs - MAGDALENE

The wait for MAGDALENE must have been absolutely agonising for die hard FKA twigs fans. In 2014 she released her debut album LP1, showcasing an eclectic mix of electronic music, pop and trip hop to create an ethereal thing of beauty. In 2015 she released her Melissa EP, somehow improving on the sounds of her debut album.

After this, FKA twigs essentially dropped off the face of the music world. Aside from one non-album single and a collaboration with A$AP Rocky, FKA twigs released no music whatsoever for almost 4 years until the first single for MAGDALENE came around, called Cellophane.

Embracing more elements of popular music, most notably by having Future featured on Holy Terrain, this album is maybe even more eclectic and diverse than her previous releases.

There are moments where she’s experimenting more than ever, most notably on Mary Magdalene. And there are also moments of overwhelming and intense beauty like on the incomparable Cellophane track. She manages to condense all of these ideas and elements into a concise and watertight 9 track album.

MAGDELENE was definitely worth the agonising wait for all fans of FKA twigs.
