10 Best Wilco Songs

5. Radio Cure

The first of two tracks on this list from Wilco’s artistic pinnacle, 2002’s Yankee Hotel Foxtrot.

Radio Cure features one of Jeff Tweedy’s most confessional lyrics. “Cheer up honey, I hope you can” he sings to a lover he doesn’t understand, before announcing “there is something wrong with me”.

It’s all very grim, and musically it’s just as bleak. The drums are pushed right to the back of the mix, leaving Tweedy’s guitar and voice to stand out front and centre, vulnerable and painful. Despite how uncomfortable it can be to listen to, it has an odd beauty. As the song comes to an end, and Tweedy’s voice verges on breaking as he sings “distance has no way of making love understandable”, it’s very hard not to start to admire the brutal honesty, warts and all.
