10 Biggest Album Flops In Rock History
4. X - Def Leppard
Unlike most of the other hair metal bands of their ilk, Def Leppard managed to put themselves back together after the grunge wave came and went. While they weren't safe from the alternative-leaning embarrassment that was Slang?, Euphoria put them back in tune with the glamorous pop flavored rock that were known for in their prime, down to the album title ending in -ia like Hysteria and Pyromania. The alt-rock buzz may have worn off, but the need for pop-flavored material got a bit too much on X.
For any fan who comes to Leppard for the licks, this is not the album for you, with the band being on full pop-mode for the duration of the disc. There's nothing inherently wrong with going in this pop direction considering Leppard's hooky chops, but this sudden switch left the die hard rock fans really cold.
Granted, it's not like any of these songs are played poorly or anything, but this sounds more like a band that would have killed the competition if they started in the '00s rather than the hair metal titans from 2 decades ago. X is not really that bad of an album when broken down, but the only thing going against these songs was the fact that Def Leppard was the name on the tin.
