10 Biggest Backstabbing Moments In Rock History

1. Pete Best - The Beatles

So...you're slogging it out in the middle of Liverpool bars when you finally get the chance to nab a record deal. While there's no guarantee that this kind of thing will lead to superstardom or anything, having a group like the Beatles writing the songs is bound to at least go somewhere, right? In theory yes...as long as you have the chops to back it up, which Pete Best was sorely lacking.

Going into record Love Me Do, producer George Martin was getting more and more frustrated with Best's style, which would often distract from the crux of the song they were supposed to be playing. Thinking that Best was suited to the bar band style delivery of their live shows, Martin insisted they find a new drummer, which was no trouble once Ringo Starr entered the picture. So...how do you fire him?

After letting them get to the top of the Liverpool bar band food chain, Best was called into manager Brian Epstein's office alone, only to be told that his services were no longer needed. As if to pour salt into the wound, Epstein got a call from Paul McCartney to make sure he did the dirty work before Best could so much as eek out a retort. There are many different ways to go about kicking someone out of the band, but this is the kind of emotionless separation that is the stuff of musical nightmares.
