10 Biggest Breakups In Rock And Roll History

Saying Goodbye With Middle Fingers High.

Rock and roll as a genre should normally be about having a good time. When Chuck Berry started it all back in the day, everything was just about good clean fun and making an audience dance by any means necessary. That doesn't mean that things didn't get up to some mischief here and there.

Outside of the many rivalries that have gone on over the years in rock music, these are the few moments where things got openly hostile in rock and roll. Whether it was a case of people growing apart or a major difference in personality, a lot of these acts have some scars to prove what went down back in the day. Not every one of these has to leave a bruise though. Even if the band ended up staying together, these breakups did end up leading to some of the more rougher patches in their career.

The minute that these fights took place, the air definitely changed and these artists would be a completely different beast than the good time band that we had gotten to know back in the day. You can have your creative differences all you want, but these are the kind of dustups that you wouldn't wish upon your worst enemy.

10. Sex Pistols

The entire genesis of punk rock in the late '70s was an absolutely beautiful mess. As much as people wanted to make as much noise as possible and assault their audience with abrasive sounds, we got some of the best songs that the rock world had ever seen before. Then again, don't be surprised when something centered around anarchy ends up going poorly.

After being assembled as the archetypal punk band, the Sex Pistols seemed to fall apart just as quickly as they got started. Once Nevermind the !*$% was released on Britain's youth and the band crashed the Royal Jubilee, they set their sights on America with their drug addled bassist Sid Vicious in tow. Though the shows in the UK were known to be extremely vicious, the touring life in the States turned lethal at times, with Sid known for etching the words "I need a fix" into his flesh before one of the shows.

By the time the band had reached San Francisco, no one was happy and everyone seemed to part ways with each other, with Johnny Rotten claiming that it would be their final performance from the stage. The band barely managed to make it back to England in one piece either, with each one finding their way back on their own. For a genre that was supposed to be all about rebellion, The Pistols were supposed to return as giants and ended up with their tail between their legs.
