10 Biggest Mistakes In Rock Music History

2. Master of Puppets - Metallica

There's absolutely no one in the world that can pick up a guitar for the first time and start playing Metallica licks. Just the idea of taking on something like Fight Fire With Fire or Creeping Death on your first day is enough to give you carpal tunnel, with James Hetfield's right hand being a synchronized machine. On their biggest thrash masterpiece though, it wasn't Hetfield you needed to worry about. It was Kirk Hammett.

Although we like to make fun of Kirk now for his constant love affair with his wah wah pedal, the real joke came when he was going into the solo for Master of Puppets. About halfway through one of the greatest solos of all time, Hammett has said that there's an obvious mistake that he hasn't forgot about as the years have gone on.

Before going absolutely mental on the whammy bar for a little bit, one of the phrases that Hammett plays actually ends up going off the neck of the guitar. Remembering from when he did the take, Kirk had said that he played it correctly a million times, but that one instance he accidentally pulled the string out of place and made a sound that no other guitar could really reproduce. Whereas most classical musicians would scoff at such a musical screw up, Kirk maintains that he's never been able to reproduce that kind of sound live ever again.
