10 Biggest Sophomore Slumps In Music History

8. Shine On - Jet

Can we just agree that the retro throwback genre got just a touch played out in the early '00s? As much as the Strokes and Arctic Monkeys may have been cute pastiches in the early days, the nostalgia trip that rock has been on in recent years has gotten far too stale, with Greta Van Fleet getting far more attention than they probably deserved. Hell, you'd think we'd all learn this lesson when Jet faceplanted with Shine On.

Granted, it's not like Jet were the most awe-inspiring band in the first place, with songs like Are You Gonna Be My Girl just sounding serviceable next to the Franz Ferdinands and Wolfmothers of the world. Still, this is one of the most drastic cases of one trick ponies you can find, with most of this record feeling lethargic by the time you hit play on the second track.

Although their heroes AC/DC have certainly benefited from writing the same rock song over and over, Jet were never ones to be particularly phenomenal at their one trick in the first place, which makes this album drag on for nearly 50 minutes. Even though these guys clearly had their fans' best interests in mind by giving them more of what they wanted, their potential had been tapped out a long time ago.
