10 Biggest Sophomore Slumps In Music History

5. Second Coming - Stone Roses

Having a great debut album might be one of the most frightening prospects any band could ask for. While it's great to hear your music gaining that kind of recognition, it also gives you the added pressure of having to follow it up with something even better. Even though The Stone Roses managed to at least take their time for Second Coming, the results weren't nearly as lucrative as some might have thought.

Then again, it's not like the Roses didn't have the time to put proper care into this one, with it emerging almost 5 years after their original debut release. As much as the time difference may have been able to help them refine their ideas, it also left a lot of bands coming in on their coattails at the same time. Aside from some of the more outlandish moments like Love Spreads, the resulting album still feels just a touch half baked, with longer songs being put on the track listing just to make it seem a lot bolder than it actually is.

Whereas the debut felt like the start of something new and exciting, Second Coming just sounds like the Roses are playing catchup with the Britpop movement that grew all around them. Although they may have had some high profile fans, it's more of a stretch for you to become massive stars just because of your friends in high places.
