10 Biggest Sophomore Slumps In Music History

6. A Saucerful of Secrets - Pink Floyd

Most fans jumping into a Pink Floyd album have been known to have a fairly high tolerance for some weird sounds. After all, if Ummagumma is any indication, the sounds coming from these prog rock icons can really test the stripe of rock fan who only listens to bands like AC/DC. Then again, there's a difference between fun weird and just plain weird, and A Saucerful of Secrets is teetering right on that line.

Featuring the final contributions from founding member Syd Barrett, you can tell that they were trying to reach for some far more outlandish soundscapes, which can either be progressive or just noise depending on which track you're in. Though you can here some of that wild Syd Barrett zaniness, this may have been an indication that things were starting to go off the rails for this lineup, as the album proceeds into some really dissonant places than some were bargaining for.

Granted, this kind of stuff may have sounded phenomenal on a Captain Beefheart album, but the fact that it's connected to same band who wrote albums like The Dark Side of the Moon feels pretty strange in retrospect. Although Floyd did end up recovering from this tumultuous time in the best way possible, it wouldn't be out of the question for your average rock fan to think that they were done after this.
