10 Britpop Bangers You Totally Forgot Existed
9. Echobelly – Great Things (1995)
Released in the week that Country House and Roll With It occupied the zenith of the charts, and with a top ten that included Take That, TLC and Michael Jackson, Great Things was always going to struggle to make much of an impact. Indeed, upon its chart entry to a highly respectable 13, this remains Echobelly’s best-selling single to date and, along with the arguably better known (but lower charting) King of the Kerb from the same album, it’s an absolute stonker.
Setting themselves apart from the standard Britpop crowd with a refreshing multi-national line up, the band launch straight into the chorus after a three-chord guitar jangle intro that sounds like it could have been lifted straight from Boz Boorer’s riffs on early solo Morrissey. “I wanna do Great Things / I don’t wanna compromise,” croons writer and vocalist Sonya Madan, her own vocal style not a million miles away from the aforementioned Misery Manc. But miserable this is not. This a jaunty, energetic three-minute pop wonder that embodies the upbeat go-out-and-grab-life-by-the-knackers idealism of the album it’s taken from.
