10 Catchiest Indie Rock Songs
8. The Coral – Dreaming Of You
Everybody has had dreams of being a rock n’ roll star. In your wildest imagination, the likelihood is you’ve pictured yourself fronting the band, the charismatic lead singer with the crowd at their beck and call. Who knew, that with one 2002 hit, The Coral could turn us all into aspiring backing singers? ‘Dreaming of You’ did just that. If you hear any group of people having a singalong with this track, you’ll soon realise that ¾ of those people don’t know any of the lyrics to the lead vocals, other than the ones followed by backing.
The average person’s understanding of this song amounts to a few seconds of incoherent mumbling, then three or four notes they can sing perfectly (see "skips a beat", "under my feet", etc.). And, do you know what? We’re perfectly okay with that. Since the dawn of music in the human species, call-and-response has been used to pass down melodies between generations. Now, I’m not saying that James Skelly’s masterclass in call-and-response is integral to the continuation of the human condition as we know it. What I am saying though, is that we’d all feel a lot less human had it not been for this jovial romp through the ending of a confusing love affair. As for that organ part at the beginning? That has to be near the top of everybody’s mental whistling playlist, right?
