10 Catchiest Indie Rock Songs

6. The Pigeon Detectives – I Found Out

This song has a distinct smell. It’s nauseating mixture of far too much wet-look hair gel and far too much expensive aftershave wasted on trying and failing to impress a girl. ‘I Found Out’ is the anthem that played on repeat in your head in a secondary school maths class when you found out the girl you fancied was going out with Greg. But, unlike Greg, you can never get sick of this tune from The Pigeon Detectives. Unlike Greg, you can really see its appeal, with its anthemic gang vocals mirroring the heady parts of the vocal melody. And unlike Greg, when the half-shouted chorus melody inevitably gets stuck in your head, it doesn’t make you want to punch anything or anyone, instead pumping your chest full of that irrepressible urge to sing along.

Matt Bowman has a knack for this type of thing, channelling the vicissitudes of a teenage love life from, we assume, the deepest depths of his own journal on multiple tracks from The Pigeon Detectives’ platinum selling debut ‘Wait For Me’. Despite the multitude of choices you have, it’s ‘I Found Out’ that cuts deepest, directing the impotent rage of rejection into two minutes and seven seconds of smashed guitars and cry-sung vocals. In conclusion, screw you, Greg, and long live The Pigeon Detectives.
