10 Christmas Songs That Make You Want To Blow Your Brains Out

10. Last Christmas - Wham! (1984)

Key Lyrics Last Christmas, I gave you my heart And the very next day, you threw it away This year to save me from tears I'll give it to someone special A song it is physically impossible to avoid at Christmas time (unless you live under a rock on Mars,) George Michael warbles this tale of Yule tide heartbreak, which has become a Christmas standard. Now I will confess to being a big fan of George Michael, both as a soloist and as part of Wham, but this is one song I could never embrace which is a pity, because it isn't a bad song, it has just been played to death every Christmas since 1984. Numerous artists - from the highly respected Whigfield to music doyenne Billie Piper - have sang their own versions of the song, but they cannot oust the original - particularly the video to the Wham! song which had George Michael (pretending to be heterosexual) and Andrew Ridgely prancing around ski slopes clad in very tasteful pastel colours. It's a poignant song which at least has the cojones to be a depressing Christmas ditty, nevertheless whenever you hear it, a weariness will sweep through your bones.

My first film watched was Carrie aged 2 on my dad's knee. Educated at The University of St Andrews and Trinity College Dublin. Fan of Arthouse, Exploitation, Horror, Euro Trash, Giallo, New French Extremism. Weaned at the bosom of a Russ Meyer starlet. The bleaker, artier or sleazier the better!
