10 Christmas Songs That Are Actually Good
8. John Lennon & Yoko Ono - Happy Xmas (War Is Over)
In what was originally written as a protest song about the Vietnam War, this classic ballad is now synonymous with the Yuletide proceedings (really running out of different ways to say "Christmas", here). One of those songs that just make you feel terrible about yourself and the world, Happy Xmas seemed to strike a chord worldwide as people found relevancy to the ongoing happenings of the time.
Written overnight in a New York City hotel room in 1971, it was initially released that year in the States where it failed to chart. Songwriting disputes meant that the UK didn't didn't see its release until a year later where it received some of the recognition it deserved, reaching the No. 4 spot.
In cruel irony, its peak chart position came in 1980 after Lennon's tragic death, reaching No. 2 in the UK Singles Chart, with the only Lennon's Imagine beating it. The song has charted a few more times since but remains a mainstay each year, with it's message becoming increasingly relevant.
