7. Christmas Eve Can Kill You

The sound of one man walking through the snow can break your heart. And stopping doesn't help, so on I'll go." Another slice of country music seasonal bleakness, Christmas Eve Can Kill You was recorded by the Everly Brothers ten years after the traditional carols of the Christmas With the Everly Brothers album. Written by seasoned country performer Dennis Linde for the more traditionally country Stories We Could Tell album, the song found Don and Phil in a significantly less merry mood than in their chart topping heyday. Christmas Eve Can Kill You is essentially Chris Rea's Driving Home For Christmas, assuming Chris had broken down on the hard shoulder and had to trek through the ice and snow while failing to hitchhike. Much of the song has the Everlys both cursing and empathising with the cars that fly by, not wanting to be turned away from their own Rea-esque homeward driving. Ultimately the song's lyrical content leaves it open whether the hitchers freeze to death by the roadside or not, but the implication is sufficient for Christmas Eve Can Kill You to not match the popularity of earlier Everlys festive hits.
