10 Classic Albums That Artists Hated Recording

1. The White Album - The Beatles

When you think of the golden age of the Beatles, things still seem to be at the height of psychedelia. Going through albums like Sgt. Peppers, it always feels like you’re being transported to some sort of hippy utopia, where you don’t have a single care in the world. That might be well and good on the musical side of things, but the Fab Four were officially at each other’s throats just a few months afterward.

After spending a few months meditating in India, the band returned to England on completely different creative pages, which got more intense when they went into their self-titled White Album. When listening to this record, it almost feels like you’re listening to four different solo artists contribute to each other’s songs, with John Lennon starting to become the more eccentric member of the band with songs like Dear Prudence and Everbody’s Got Something to Hide, while Paul McCartney leans into his more optimistic side on songs like Blackbird and Ob La Di Ob La Da.

Though this album is a bit packed to the gills, it’s not like everyone was happy with the results, with Paul not being that involved with Revolution 9 and John being hurt that Paul would go off and create entire songs by himself like on Martha My Dear. There were definitely a few too many arguments in the studio, but when you listen to these songs, you don’t hear the band being bitter. This is the sound of the band taking down their walls and showing you the more vulnerable side of themselves.
